Connecticut Gun Laws at a Glance
In Connecticut, magazine sales are limited to 10 rounds and the state has an assault-weapons ban. Connecticut also has rules on permits to purchase, waiting periods, and registration; see the table for details.
| Permit to purchase | Required: pistol permit or eligibility certificate (handguns and long guns) |
|---|---|
| Waiting period | 14 days for long guns (waived for permit, certificate, or hunting-license holders); handguns clear on an instant authorization-number check with no fixed wait |
| Firearm registration | Not required generally; required for grandfathered "assault weapons" |
| Magazine limit | 10 rounds (declared pre-2014 magazines exempt) |
| State "assault weapon" ban | Yes (since 1993; expanded 2013 and 2023; registered pre-ban guns exempt) |
| Carry | A Connecticut pistol permit is required to carry a handgun in public. Open carry has been banned since October 2023, so carry must be concealed; applicants must be 21, complete live-fire training, and pass a background check. Connecticut honors no other state's permits, but non-residents can apply for a Connecticut permit. |
