I recently had a very disappointing experience at this Academy Sports location while picking up a firearm I legally purchased online. Upon arrival, the store manager, Austin, took my ID and immediately began criticizing the condition of it. I have purchased firearms from multiple Academy Sports locations in the past and have never encountered an issue with my identification. I then provided my concealed carry permit, which he accepted without further issue. During the interaction, he asked if the pink Ruger I purchased was “for me,” which felt unprofessional and unnecessary. Customers should not feel questioned or made uncomfortable about their lawful purchases. What concerns me most is that I was ultimately denied the sale without a clear explanation. Instead of properly communicating the reason, I was told to try another location. Since then, I have been flagged in a denial system across Academy Sports stores, which has been extremely frustrating and confusing. Most troubling, during this encounter I recall hearing what I believe was a racial slur while I was being asked to leave. As an African American customer who has previously completed lawful purchases without issue, this experience left me feeling unwelcome, disrespected, and unfairly treated. This experience left me feeling unwelcome and disrespected. Professionalism, clarity, and respect should be standard — especially in a regulated transaction like this. I hope Academy Sports reviews this situation seriously, as no customer should leave feeling uncomfort

James set the tone the moment I walked in with his warm welcome and high energy — the rest of the team followed right behind him with that same great vibe. When I was checking out, Lauren or Ashley (I honestly forgot which was which 😅) did an excellent job, and the other cashier came through with the assist to encourage me to sign up for the Academy card. Although I declined, as a businessman I can always appreciate a good sales pitch — especially when it’s delivered with candor and not a transactional vibe. Even after I passed on the card, their energy stayed high and authentic. Keep up the great work, Academy!
