Hawaii Gun Laws at a Glance
In Hawaii, a permit to acquire from county police is required for all firearms, with a 14-day waiting period built into the permit process. All firearms must be registered within 5 days of acquisition. A 10-round limit applies to pistol magazines only, and the "assault weapon" ban applies to assault pistols only; rifles and shotguns are not banned.
| Permit to purchase | Required: permit to acquire from county police (all firearms) |
|---|---|
| Waiting period | 14 days (all firearms, built into permit process) |
| Firearm registration | Required for all firearms (within 5 days of acquisition) |
| Magazine limit | 10 rounds (pistol magazines only) |
| State "assault weapon" ban | Yes (assault pistols only; rifles and shotguns not banned) |
| Carry | A license is required to carry a handgun. Hawaii is shall-issue for concealed carry licenses for residents 21 or older who pass a background check and a training course with a live-fire test, but it honors no other state's permits. After the June 2026 Supreme Court ruling in Wolford v. Lopez, license holders may carry on private property open to the public unless the owner says otherwise. Many sensitive places remain off-limits. |
