New Jersey Gun Laws at a Glance
In New Jersey, buyers need a Firearms Purchaser ID card for long guns and a purchase permit for each handgun. The wait is 7 days for handguns and none for long guns. Registration is not required, but police record all handgun sales and new residents must register handguns they bring in. The magazine limit is 10 rounds, and the "assault weapon" ban has applied since 1990. Registered pre-ban guns are exempt.

| State "assault weapon" ban | Yes (since 1990; registered pre-ban guns exempt) |
| Carry | A Permit to Carry a Handgun is required and is now issued shall-issue style. The old "justifiable need" test was eliminated in late 2022. Applicants must be 21, pass training and background checks, and carry concealed only. Open carry is not allowed. A long list of "sensitive places" is off limits even with a permit. Parts of the 2022 carry law are still being fought over in federal court. |
