Few firearms are as universally recognized as the M16A2. Whether you’ve seen it in war films, first-person shooter video games, or historical articles, the silhouette is instantly familiar.
For decades, this rifle served as the backbone of the U.S. military’s weaponry.
Though largely phased out in favor of the lighter and more modular M4, it has never lost its appeal. Thanks to Springfield Armory, civilian shooters can now get a near-authentic experience with the SA-16A2 (SA-16).
From the carry handle and A2 front sight tower to the ribbed handguard and fixed stock, Springfield Armory has meticulously recreated the look and feel of the original M-16A2.
The lower receiver even features authentic markings such as “Property of U.S. Govt.” and selector switch markings that mimic the original rifle, though it remains a semi-automatic-only firearm (unfortunately).
This attention to detail makes it a standout piece for collectors and enthusiasts alike.
The round handguard has integral aluminum heat shields and houses the chrome-lined 20-inch barrel. The handguard had a slightly inconsistent fit, with the two pieces not flush all the way down the side, but it was barely noticeable and didn’t affect performance by any means.
Additionally, it’s important to remember, though, that since it lacks M-LOK or Picatinny rails, it does limit upgrades for those used to customizing their ARs.
As you work towards the front of the rifle, you’ll find a bayonet lug and sling swivel that provides both authenticity and flexibility. Even if you never mount a bayonet, it’s a pretty cool feature to have.
For the last of the more noticeable features, the stock offers unmatched stability and ample internal storage. I was able to fit an entire box of ammo inside with a little bit of room to spare.
Once you “look under the hood”, you’ll find Springfield’s Accutite tensioning system, which ensures a tight, rattle-free fit between the upper and lower receivers. It’s a subtle but important enhancement that improves both the rifle’s performance and long-term durability.
Some might buy the SA-16 to display, but it’s far from just a showpiece. While I have not torture tested it or run thousands of rounds through it (yet), I have sent 480 rounds downrange without a single hiccup.
The rifle has happily eaten cheap steel-case ammo, and when I wanted to take a closer look at its accuracy, it performed very well with a variety of Hornady ammo, such as 62-grain Black, 55-grain Varmint Express, and 53-grain Superformance Varmint.
I’ve shot it at varying distances from 20 to 75 yards, both indoors and outdoors, and can say it’s more accurate than my abilities.
That said, I could easily maintain groupings like the one in the picture below at 25 yards, and every pop can, gong, and water bottle proved no match within 75 yards. If I had the room to shoot farther, I don’t foresee any issues, and I look forward to pushing this rifle much further soon.
